A 63-year-old Montegut man was killed in a crash Thursday night in the 700 block of La. Highway 55.

Louisiana State Police Troop C Master Trooper Bryan Zeringue said Charles Bailey, 63, of Montegut, was operating a 2001 Ford pickup southbound on La. 55 when for unknown reasons, he ran off into the southbound lane.

Zeringue said in an effort to compensate Bailey veered to the left and exited the northbound lane, striking a ditch and overturning his vehicle.

Bailey, who was not wearing his seat belt, received fatal injuries in the crash.

Zeringue said it’s not yet known whether alcohol or drug use were a factor in the crash. Blood was drawn from the victim and toxicology results are pending.
