An explosion at a Morgan City power plant has left most of the city without power and authorities scrambling to restore electricity.

A transformer exploded and ignited around 6 p.m. at the Joseph J. Cefalu Sr. Municipal Steam Plant, according to police and fire officials.

The plant was evacuated as firefighters battled the blaze, which took about an hour to contain. Authorities said no one was injured in the incident; however, a firefighter was transported to a nearby hospital after becoming overheated from the blaze.

The Cefalu plant is located at 701 Avoca Road, across from the Morgan City Cemetery.
