Nicholls State University awarded 646 degrees on Saturday, Dec. 11, to students who completed coursework in the summer and fall semesters of 2010. The ceremony marked Nicholls’ 87th Commencement.


Degrees were conferred and presented by Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, university president, in Stopher Gymnasium.


Thirteen baccalaureate graduates earned degrees with the highest academic honors n summa cum laude. They include Holly K. B. Acosta of Lockport; Lawrence J. Briggs of New Orleans; Danielle V. Burgo of Thibodaux; Abbie E. Burt of Napoleonville; Megan E. Dufresne of Destrehan; Tristan E. Guidry of Raceland; Brooke A. Hebert of Franklin; Melodie M. LeBouef of Raceland; Traci L. Martin of Paulina; Sarah A. Pontiff of Morgan City; Bojan Stevovic of Belgrade, Serbia; Jacey E. Tanner of Houma; and Colleen F. Terhune of Thibodaux. Three of these students n Dufresne, Hebert and LeBouef n graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning the President’s Medal of Honor.

Mike Strain, commissioner of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, delivered the keynote address. Nicholls also bestowed an honorary Doctor of Letters to Bob Miller of Morgan City. The first major donor to the University Honors Program, Miller has provided honor students the opportunity to study abroad in England and Costa Rica at no cost to the students.

Graduates are listed by geographical origin of record, degree and major, with academic honors in baccalaureate curricula included. Summa cum laude indicates the student earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 or higher. Magna cum laude graduates, those with a GPA of 3.7 to 3.899, and cum laude honorees, those earning a GPA between 3.5 and 3.699, are also designated.
