Last-minute shuffle has few surprises

Qualifying for the fall election closed Friday with few surprises.


The gubernatorial ballot promises to be a hefty one, regardless of where voters reside.


Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal faces opposition from a relative crowd of unknowns n partyless candidates David Blanchard of Brusly, Leonard “Lenny” Bollingham of Baton Rouge, Ron Ceasar of Opelousas and William “Bob” Lang Jr. of Natchitoches n and Democrats Cary J. Deaton of Metairie, Tara Hollis of Haynesville, Niki Bird Papazoglakis of Baton Rouge and Ivo “Trey” Roberts of Gretna. Libertarian Scott Lewis rounds out the race.

The battle for state lieutenant governor promises to be a tough fight. Incumbent “Jay” Dardenne and St. Bernard Parish President Billy Nungesser, both Republicans, are seeking election.


The Secretary of State post sees former St. Tammany Parish representative Tom Schedler, who was appointed to the post by Jindal, and state Speaker of the House Jim Tucker facing off. Both men are Republicans.


Attorney General James “Buddy” Caldwell and former Republican Congressman Joseph Cao of New Orleans are vying for state attorney general post.

Republican Treasurer John Kennedy returns to office unopposed.


Commissioner of Insurance Jim Donelon, the Republican incumbent, faces Donald C. Hodge (D), of Baton Rouge.


Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Mike Strain is being challenged by reform candidate Belinda “B” Alexandrenko of Lafayette and Democrat Jamie LaBranche of Laplace. Incumbent Strain is a Republican from Covington.
