UPDATE: 1:00 p.m.

Power has been restored to the area.

Terrebonne Parish school officials say that a power outage affecting South Terrebonne High School Friday afternoon has not resulted in class cancellations, and that activities will continue as close to normal as possible.

A power outage affecting roughly 525 customers was reported shortly after Noon, and Entergy told officials power should be restored by 2 p.m.

Terrebonne Superintendent of Schools Philip Martin said that on a day with relatively low temperatures – the mercury was at 58 degrees in Bourg – there should be no undue discomfort for the school’s 1,000 or so students nor its employees, and so a decision was made to continue operations. South Terrebonne relies heavily on air conditioning due to its design.

“We are continuing with classes,” Martin said. “This may create some disruption but it’s not something we haven’t dealt with in the past.”

At elementary schools, Martin said, a likelihood of class suspension might be more likely.

In response to a question about lack of teaching tools like audio visual presentations during the outage, Martin said, “it will be very old school till the power comes on.”
