Following a brief chase Monday, Houma Police pulled a peeping Tom from underneath a house where he was hiding to avoid arrest, a department spokesman said.

A 23-year-old woman called police after she spotted a man standing outside of her front window watching her, Lt. Todd Duplantis. When officers arrived in the 1100 block of Short Street, the man was nowhere in sight, he said.

The woman described the peeping Tom as a black man with a bald head. She said when she saw him looking in the window she screamed, ran to her bedroom and dialed 911, Duplantis said. While she was on the phone with the police dispatcher, she looked again and the man was gone, he said.

Police searched the outside of the house, but did not find the man, Duplantis said. They also patrolled the area in search of the suspect.

At 11:30 p.m., officers were dispatched back to the 100 block of Short Street after the woman spotted the man walking near her home, Duplantis said.

When officers arrived, the woman told officers the peeping Tom was wearing a dark blue jacket with blue jean pants, he said. On Dewey Street near Lee Avenue Park, officers stopped a man matching that description.

The man, Herman “Pooney” Williams Jr., 49, who is homeless, has a history of criminal trespassing and resisting officers, Duplantis said.

When the officer interviewing Williams asked the man to place his hands on the hood of the police unit, Williams ran, the spokesman said. The officer chased Williams south on Lee Avenue and east onto Dewey Street before losing sight of him. They finally found him hiding underneath a house on the 1100 block of Bourg Street, Duplantis said.

Williams was charged with peeping Tom, criminal trespass and resisting an officer. He was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Jail where he is awaiting trial or bond.
