Newly elected Greater Lafourche Port Commission members Perry Gisclair and Jimmy Guidry will be the only new face when the group swears in commissioners later this year.

Voters in the 10th Ward of Lafourche Parish decided three seats in the Nov. 7 run-off election, returning two incumbents to office and electing Guidry.

Harris “Chuckie” Cheramie Jr. held off a challenge from Iris Doucet to claim another six-year term on the board, representing Seat A. Cheramie received 2,973 votes or 51 percent, to Doucet’s 2,854 votes, or 49 percent.

“I would like to thank all of the people who supported me and we will continue working hard to make sure that the port continues to be a good source of jobs for our community,” he said. Attempts to reach Doucet for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.

In the contest for Seat C, incumbent Jimmy “T-Jim” Lafont Jr. was also re-elected to another term, squeezing out a 39-vote victory over Bryan Duet. Lafont received 2,911 votes to Duet’s 2,872 votes.

“I would like to thank all of the people who supported me in this election and I wish the best of luck to the commission and port in the coming years,” Duet said.

Lafont also thanked his supporters and pledged to continue working hard to improve the port. “We have a gem in Port Fourchon and we’ve got to continually work to make it a better port,” he said.

Guidry, a Harbor Police officer, will represent Seat H on the commission, having beaten incumbent Jimmie “Beau” Martin Jr. Guidry received 3,193 votes, or 55 percent, to Martin’s 2,644 or 45 percent.

Attempts to reach both men for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.

Gisclair will take over Seat B on the commission, taking over the post currently held by Harry Cheramie who chose not to seek re-election.

The remaining five members of the nine-member board were automatically re-elected to another six-year term, having been unopposed.

The commission is the policy making body for Port Fourchon, located at the southern tip of Lafourche Parish, as well as the South Lafourche Leonard Miller Jr. Airport, which is located in Galliano.
