Lafourche Parish deputies arrested a Raceland man Monday and are searching for his cousin after the two dumped a load of trash in a ditch over the weekend.

Water Patrol deputy Teddy Granier responded to a complaint from a parish pump operator that the trash had been left in a ditch near a water pumping station behind Bracoto and Kohn streets in Raceland, according to a sheriff’s spokesman.

Included with the trash n old fishing lines, empty cardboard boxes, electrical equipment and wood n were receipts, magazines and various pieces of paperwork bearing the name of Steve Sheffield, said Larry Weidel. Granier went to both Thibodaux addresses in search of Sheffield with no luck.

The deputy left a message for the Thibodaux man, which were returned later that evening, Weidel said.

The two met, and Sheffield, after being advised of his rights, told the deputy he had cleaned his attic out of the weekend and had hired two men n Gary Major, 46, of 260 Triple Oaks St., Raceland, and his cousin, Lawrence Hill n with a truck and flatbed trailers to throw the trash at a dumpsite.

According to Weidel, Sheffield said the men were taking the trash to a dumpsite near Raceland. The charge per load to dump the trash was $5, Sheffield told Granier.

Major told Granier he was told it was OK to dump the trash on the side of the road near the pump station, Weidel said. Major agreed to return to the site and pick up the trash as soon as possible.

Major was arrested and charged with trash dumping. Hill is being sought by deputies, and will be arrested when he returns to Raceland, Weidel said.
