A 22-year-old Raceland man is in jail on a second-degree murder charge in connection with Lafourche Parish’s first homicide of 2009.

Authorities said Toby Gray, of 496 Triple Oaks, is being held in connection with the murder of 37-year-old Raquel Barrios.

Her body was found on Kahn Street shortly before 8:30 p.m. Sunday in an isolated area behind the Alidore community. According to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, she had been shot several times.

Detectives said Gray and Barrios had known each other for approximately two to three weeks. The shooting allegedly occurred after the two argued about money that Barrios reportedly owed Gray.

“Our detectives did an outstanding job working with the community in solving this case,” said Sheriff Craig Webre. “There is no doubt their job would have been much more difficult had people in the community not reached out to help us.”

District Judge Hugh Larose set Gray’s bond at $500,000.
