A Raceland man has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and three counts of assault for breaking a beer bottle over another man’s head and then using it to repeatedly stab the man, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office reported.

The argument, deputies said, began over a woman.

Jarmaine Swopen, 31, of 1594 Hwy. 182, Apt. 7, and the other man were embroiled in the argument when Swopen hit the man’s head, breaking the beer bottle. Authorities said Swopen used the broken bottle to stab the man several times in the face and head.

The victim was rushed to St. Anne Hospital in Mathews where he remains in stable condition.

Neighbors came to the man’s aid and notified the sheriff’s office of the assault.

During that time, Swopen reportedly went into an apartment, grabbed and knife and began threatening people, the sheriff’s office reported.

Neighbors wrestled the Raceland man to the ground and took the knife from him. Deputies arrived shortly afterward and took Swopen into custody.

At the Criminal Operations Center in Lockport, Swopen admitted to hitting the victim but said he didn’t remember stabbing him, authorities said.

District Judge Bruce Simpson set bond at $20,000. Swopen remains at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in lieu of bond.

The maximum penalty for second-degree murder and the assault charges is $15,000 in fines and life in prison.
