The race for the Louisiana House of Representatives District 53 seat will advance to a runoff between two of three Republican contenders that met during Saturday’s primary contest.

Claiming 40.24 percent of the ballots cast during the race, political newcomer Lenar Whitney led the three-way battle with 3,752 votes to 2,908 for Billy Hebert and 2,663 going to Theresa Ellender to force a runoff.

“I don’t know what caused it,” Whitney said about the way the votes went. “Our game plan is to go full speed ahead.”

Hebert, who is the only one of the three candidates to hold elected office as current Terrebonne Parish Councilman, said Sunday that he was surprised at the results, but that he will work to educate voters of his volunteer as well as elected experience.

“I’m going to revamp my advertising and get away from my office and go out and meet the people,” Hebert said. “I’m going to do a grass roots campaign for 30 days non-stop.”

Hebert and Whitney agreed that people are looking for change. Neither could specify what that change might be. Both contend that they are not professional politicians and that each will run on experience.

The two will face off in a final round for voters on Nov. 19.
