Kevin Voisin squeaked by Steve Robichaux on Saturday to win the Terrebonne Parish Council’s District 6 seat formerly held by Leland Robichaux, who died earlier this year.

Voisin received 862 votes to Robichaux’s 846. He will be sworn in at the parish council’s Dec. 17 meeting.

The Nov. 4 primary was not as close, with Robichaux winning 41 percent of the vote in a three-man race. Voisin gained 32 percent of the primary vote.

“We had always polled well with people who vote often,” Voisin said, explaining his runoff victory after trailing in the primary. “It was people calling their friends, and them calling their friends.”

“I understand it was grassroots, which is how we’ll make Terrebonne Parish better,” he said.

Voisin called the runoff a “coin-flip” election.

“It was a positive campaign,” he said. “He (Robichaux) kept it above board. I’m sure he’ll continue to do great things for the parish.”

Voisin said he will try to get a feel for the parish council during his first couple of meetings. His agenda during the primary included pushing for locks on the Houma Navigation Canal, improving zoning and developing parks and green spaces.

He said, “They (voters) will hold me accountable, I know.”
