Shrimp fishermen may take to state controlled waters — those furthest inshore — when the white shrimp season opens locally

Today, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission set the opening dates for the fall inshore shrimp season based on information provided by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) biologists and public comments.

State controlled waters from the Mississippi to the Atchafalaya open at 6 p.m. Monday (Aug. 18). Waters further west will open Aug. 27. Acy Cooper, president of the Louisiana Shrimp Association, said issues relating to concerns fishermen have over dockside prices and other matters will be discussed at a special meeting in Houma, scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 8.

Cooper said proposed legislation that would require a state tax on imported shrimp will be presented, as shaped by Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser.

An update will also be provided on measures instituted in Congress by Sen. John Kennedy, who addressed fishermen directly in June.

“We want to keep fishermen updated on what is happening,” Cooper said. “It is worth coming together as fishermen in Louisiana to tell the rest of the state and the country that we need help and for people to start hearing us.”

The meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the American Legion Leonard Hotard Post, 602 Legion Avenue in Houma.

Fishermen and their representatives will also be discussing tariffs being put in place by President Donald Trump on foreign shrimp and related matters.
