St Mary Parish Sheriff David A. Naquin issued the following statement and warning to area residents.

Due to the high water situation, access to the levee system in St. Mary Parish will be limited and in some areas closed. We are working with the National Guard to begin setting up check points to all access areas to boat landings in the Atchafalaya Basin, which includes Verdunville, Myette Point, Charenton, and Wilson Boat Landing.

After discussions with the levee board, driving on the bottom of the levee is allowed.

If you have camps or other interests in the Atchafalaya Basin you should complete your preparations immediately.

The rising water will dictate when all access will be prohibited, and this will occur, but we are just not sure when that will happen.

In addition, we anticipate the closing of the levee road from the Charenton Locks to Lake Fausse Point at some point in a coordinated effort with Iberia Parish.

People who have livestock and hunting leases on the levee system, both on the Atchafalaya Basin and Wax Lake Outlet are notified that all gates shall be unlocked for access by inspectors and levee board personnel.  Gates may be closed to keep livestock in, but any gate found to locked, the lock will be removed, and this is effective immediately.
