Five parish-wide proposition issues will be considered by voters in St. Mary Parish.

Consolidated School District No. 5 is seeking approval to renew an 11.18 mills property tax for 10 years that would offer $6.3 million per year for elementary and secondary school financing.

Separated into two propositions, the Recreational District No. 2 is seeking continuation of a 13.34 mills tax on all property to generate an estimated $1.1 million annually to maintain and improve recreational facilities. This measure is joined with a 0.34 mills levy to be continued through 2011.

Recreational District No. 2 is also asking voters to approve securing $1 million in general obligation bonds for the next 10 years to improve and maintain parks, playgrounds, recreation centers, by way of ad valorem taxes based on an estimated 3 mills.

St. Mary Parish Water Commission No. 2 is seeking approval of a proposed 11 mills tax renewal for the next 10 years. The estimated annual collection of $730,000 is intended for the constructing and improving of water-work and sewage systems.

Along with voters in all other Louisiana parishes, St. Mary voters will consider the disabled veterans homestead exemption based on November 2010 voter approval to have the concept become a legislatively referred constitutional amendment.

The Louisiana Property Tax Exemption for Disabled Veterans allows local parishes the authority to conduct elections that if passed would allow the first $150,000 assessed value of a home occupied by a disabled veteran to be tax free. Prior to being passed as Act 1049, exemptions for disabled veterans were held at the first $75,000 value on a home as being exempt.

St. Mary voters have an option to approve or deny local application of the Disabled Veteran’s Homestead Exemption that applies to select real property.
