Approval of $7.5 million in community development bonds means the Charenton Canal project in St. Mary Parish can move forward.

The Louisiana State Bond Commission on Thursday gave a nod of approval for the financing of $18 million in projects that overall offer the state a refinance savings of $3.7 million, by buying existing public debt.

“The Bond Commission approved statewide funding for various projects and improvements, State Treasurer John Kennedy said.”We also saved taxpayers millions by signing off on several refinancing [products] of public debt that will save money for state and local projects.”

In St. Mary Parish, work will proceed to acquire approximately 25 acres of land on Charenton Canal in Franklin. Bulk heading water frontage will include construction of a 250 feet by 50 feet slip with a 600-ton capacity travel lift.

A 50,000-square-foot fabrication facility will also be built, as will a 25,000 square feet storage facility, a 10,000-square-foot office facility and a 6,000-square-foot employee facility.

St. Mary Parish Director of Economic Development Frank Fink was not available to comment on the bond approval.

Additional Bond Commission approvals include $3.28 million to the city of Mansfield for capital improvement, $1 million for Alexandria to improve the sewer portion of a combined electrical power plant, waterworks plant, natural gas system and sewer system.

Abbeville is also in line for $923,000 in bond funding for capital improvements.

Approximately $6 million has been allocated to rehabilitate a sewer system and provide a reserve fund in a project that includes Morgan City, Albany, Belle Rose, Covington, Donaldsonville, Gonzales, Greenwell Springs, Hammond, Labadieville, Loranger, Napoleonville, Piere Part, Plaincourtville, Plattenville, Ponchatoula, Port Allen, Prairieville, St. Francisville, Tickfaw and Watson.
