One of Louisiana’s leaders and innovators in coastal preservation and erosion control is calling it quits after more than four decades on the job.

His employer is holding a celebration and fundraiser to show their appreciation.

The Barataria-Terrebonne Estuary Foundation (BTEF) announced this week that it will hold a retirement celebration on June 26 at the Nicholls State University Ballroom to honor Kerry St. Pe’ as he moves into retirement.

St. Pe’ has been the director of the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program since 1997. In total, he has logged 43 years of service trying to protect Louisiana’s coast.

“It certainly wasn’t an easy decision,” St. Pe’ said at the time he announced his decision. “It was an emotional and very difficult decision to leave. It’s very hard to leave a program you’ve spent so much time building.”

The retirement celebration is going to be open to the public and it’s designed to show St. Pe’ how much he has meant to the Tri-parish area over the years.

According to a release issued by BTNEP, proceeds from the event will go to establish a scholarship in St. Pe’s name, which will be awarded to a student attending Nicholls State University.

The cost to attend the celebration will be $35 per person. Heavy Hors d’oeuvres will be served at the event, as well as a cash bar. Business attire is requested among participants.

The celebration is scheduled to last from 4-7 p.m., and a program honoring St. Pe’ will take place from 5:30-6:30.

For more information or to RSVP, those interested are asked to contact BTNEP’s office at 985-447-0868.

They may also visit the program’s website at www.btnep.org. The deadline to RSVP for the celebration is June 19.

Anyone not able to attend, but wishing to contribute to the scholarship can call the office or visit the website as well.
