Following a tense three-hour standoff with Houma Police, a local man was arrested on burglary and first-degree murder charges Tuesday.

Department spokesman Lt. Todd Duplantis said police were called to 405 Authement Street to investigate a possible burglary in progress. When they arrived, officers saw Matthew Hunter Boudreaux, 24, of 2007 Mary Hughes Dr., Houma, enter the house.

From outside the residence, via a PA system, officers ordered Boudreaux to leave the house, Duplantis said. Several gunshots were heard from inside the house, he said.

Using a handgun, Boudreaux fired more than a dozen gunshots from inside the house, Duplantis said. He shot out windows in the house and struck a car parked outside as well as a nearby house.

Duplantis said Houma Police did not fire any shots.

Shortly after 2 p.m., after negotiations with Houma Police, Boudreaux surrendered, the spokesman said.

Boudreaux was charged with five counts of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated burglary. He was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Jail.

Law enforcement agents with the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana State Police troopers assisted in the standoff, Duplantis said.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident and more charges may follow, he said.
