A registered sex offender who led Terrebonne deputies on a wild chase last week was shot and wounded, after allegedly trying to run down a deputy who had attempted to stop him.

Harvey Lee Hano, 30, of Covington, was taken to Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center for treatment of gunshot wounds following the Saturday morning incident. Maj. Malcolm Wolfe, a sheriff’s office spokesman, said Hano will be booked into the Terrebonne Parish jail upon release from the hospital.

“Around 1230 a.m. on Saturday morning , Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies observed a Dodge Neon traveling on Martin Luther King Blvd,” Wolfe said.

Deputies, officials said, had knowledge that Lafourche Parish authorities were seeking a car and driver matching the description in reference to a felony investigation of an undisclosed nature.

Deputies had also recently taken a complaint from a business in Terrebonne Parish, regarding counterfeit currency. The car and its driver were also a match.

When Hano traveled onto Tunnel Boulevard, authorities said, he allegedly committed a traffic offense at which point deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

“Hano refused to stop and a pursuit ensued,” Wolfe said. “During this pursuit Hano violated multiple traffic offences and drove erratically.”

At one point, authorities said, Hano led the pursuing deputies down a dead-end street in a residential area, and drove the car into a field where he began circling.

The car struck a fence and a house, causing it to stop. Deputies attempted to approach it, Wolfe said.

At that point, according to Wolfe’s narrative, Hano “accelerated aggressively” toward a deputy, allegedly attempting to run him over.

“The deputy discharged his duty weapon in attempt to stop this threat,” Wolfe said, adding that Hano then drove away and headed into the downtown Houma area. Houma City Police and other agencies were notified, and the chase resumed. Hano then abandoned the car and fled on foot, attempting to elude police by hiding in Bayou Terrebonne.

Police located him and took him into custody, at which time, Wolfe said, they found crystal methamphetamine in his possession.

Hano’s condition after transport to Chabert was listed as stable. He had not been released or booked as of Monday morning. Wolfe said that when he is arrested, Hano will be arrested for Improper Lane Usage, Reckless Operation Of A Motor Vehicle, Aggravated Flight, Aggravated Criminal Damage To Property, Attempted First Degree Murder Of A Police Officer, Possession Of Crystal Meth. Hano also faces potential felony charges in another jurisdiction, and has an active warrant for parole violation.

An official said Hano was struck by at least two rounds from the deputy’s weapon, and that both appeared to be clean wounds that exited his body, rather than lodging inside.

The Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal investigation of the shooting, and officials are confident the facts in evidence do not appear to warrant an outside agency’s assistance.

Hano is listed as a Tier 1 sex offender in St. Tammany Parish, where records show that he has failed to comply with offender requirements of notifying authorities of a new address.

The designation dates back to a conviction for carnal knowledge of a juvenile.
