For 59 years, a consortium of American Legion posts in Terrebonne Parish has selected a slate of candidates for their coveted “Terrebonne Teenager of the Year” award, and Saturday this year’s winner will be announced.

A total of 27 nominees from seven of Terrebonne’s high schools are under consideration for the honor, chosen as a result of volunteer services to their schools, churches and communities over the prior year. Each high school is allowed to nominate at least four students for recognition.

Nominees provide judges with their academic records, resumes of service and achievements and letters of recommendation. The competition’s first winner was Leo Hebert Jr., who is now a physician.

Now, as then, the winner is chosen by members of a committee who are current and former post commanders.

Tickets are still available for the special dinner being held in honor of the nominees at which the announcement will be made. It is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at American Legion Post 31 on Legion Avenue in Houma. The winner will also be honored Jan. 20 at the Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce annual banquet.

Lee Shaffer III, one of the event organizers, said he is looking forward to Saturday’s award ceremony, which he sees as a harbinger of optimism.

“We see so many negative trends occurring in our community, nation and world, yet when one comes to an event like this you see the hopeful prospects for the future,” Shaffer said. “I’m certain this is why I love this event. These nominees give us that hope for the future. We know if we have leaders like them our future is very bright.”

The winner receives a plaque commemorating the achievement, and is usually offered an internship or job with the Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government in the summer of their senior year in high school.
