The Terrebonne Parish School Board enacted a measure which would limit the terms of board members to three terms at Tuesday afternoon’s meeting.

The measure comes in response to a 2012 state-wide school board term limits decision, which limited Louisiana school board members to 12 consecutive years.

The law is not retrospective, meaning those who have already served 12 years may seek a maximum of 12 more beginning with the current election cycle.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story stated that school board members who have already served 12 or more years would not be allowed to seek re-election in 2016.
