Terrebonne Parish has made sandbags available to West Terrebonne citizens in preparation for the threat of flooding from the Atchafalaya River.

Terrebonne Parish President Gordon Dove ordered the Public Works Division to provide sand and sandbags for self-filling at the West Terrebonne Fire Stations located in Gibson, Gibson East and Donner and the Bayou Black Fire Department on Savanne Road, beginning at 3 p.m. today. The parish encourages residents to bring their own shovels to fill the bags.

Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government declared a state of emergency on Monday in response to flooding threats from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers. The Atchafalaya is currently expected to crest at 8.5 feet on Jan. 23.

That level is subject to increase if the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers decides to open the Morganza Flood Structure. The USACE has not made an official decision at this time. The Bonnet Carre Spillway is scheduled to open Sunday.

The Houma Times will provide updates as they come, and residents can check parish websites tohsep.com or tpcg.org for the latest information as well.
