Terrebonne Parish School Board votes to close three local elementary schools

During their regular board meeting tonight, the Terrebonne Parish School Board voted to consolidate Bayou Black Elementary School, Gibson Elementary School, and Honduras Elementary School, effective in the 2024-2025 school year. The motion was met with strong opposition from a crowd of teachers, parents, and community members.

The proposal presented read to the board as follows:


  • Consolidation of Bayou Black Elementary School zones 36C and 37C with Mulberry Elementary at the Mulberry Elementary School site
  • Consolidation of Bayou Black Elementary School zones 36D, 37D, 36E, and 37E with Schriever Elementary (P-3) and Caldwell Middle (4-6) at the Schriever Elementary and Caldwell Middle School sites
  • Consolidation of Gibson Elementary School with Schriever Elementary (P-3) and Caldwell Middle (4-6) at the Schriever Elementary and Caldwell Middle School sites
  • Consolidation of Honduras Elementary School zones 28D, 29B, and 29C with Village East
    Elementary at the Village East Elementary School site
  • Consolidation of Honduras Elementary School zones 27C, 28C, and 30D with Acadian Elementary at the Acadian Elementary School site.

Board members Gregory Harding (District 2), Matthew J. Ford (District 3) and Roger Dale DeHart (District 7) voted against the motion. Board members Michael LaGarde (District 1), Debi Benoit (District 4), Don Crowdus (District 5), Clyde F. Hamner (District 6), MayBelle N. Trahan, Ed.D (District 8, Board President), and Dane Voisin (District 9, Vice President) voted in favor of the motion.
