Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes will collect Christmas trees to help rebuild the region’s coast.

Residents who would like to participate in the Terrebonne Parish Christmas Tree Recycling Program are asked to place discarded Christmas trees at their normal garbage pickup spot Jan. 2-8. Trees that are flocked, artificial or outfitted with tinsel, stands or decorations cannot be used.

Residents can also drop off trees at the TPCG Residential Drop-off Sites at 263 Ashland Landfill Road, 651 Isle of Cuba Road in Schriever or 160 Crochetville Road in Montegut.

Christmas trees collected will be used to fight coastal erosion along the Intracoastal Waterway near Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge. The trees will be placed in retention fences to help reduce wave breaks in the marsh as well as act as a filter to collect sediment and build new land behind the fence.

Lafourche Parish will also collect trees to create an artificial reef in Catfish Lake.

The parish has not finalized the dates for pick up, but the dates will likely be the last two weekends in January. The dates will be posted on the parish government website and on the parish’s Facebook page when they are announced. Residents may also call 985-537-7603 to find out the dates.

St. Mary Parish will not be collecting trees this year.

Christmas tree fences, such as the one pictured, are used to enhance wetlands habitats. Trees collected locally will be used in similar pens to fight coastal erosion.
