Unusual cold weather caused the local farmers’ vegetation to sprout later than expected this season, but have no fear the Thibodaux Main Street Farmer’s Market officially opened Saturday.

The free event is held every Saturday on Maronge and West 2nd streets in Thibodaux from 7 to 11 a.m. Customers can shop, enjoy live music and socialize with neighbors.

Market Chairwoman Joyce Benoit said customers can purchase locally-grown produce, jams, jellies, pies, seafood, pralines and other great items including exotic Middle Eastern produce.

Every year, local marketer Tammie Arcement brings such excitement to the market with her Middle Eastern dips and pies, such as spanokopita (Greek Spinach Pie), dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves), tzatziki (yogurt dip) and baba ghannooj (smoky eggplant dip), Benoit said.

“Each week, Tammie visits the market displaying food products from a different ethnic region. She brings Caribbean Island, Italian, Japanese, Mexican, Indian, Cuban and Central American,” the market chairwoman said.

The market also has plant vendors, a photographer and arts and crafts vendors. There is also entertainment for the children.

The Thibodaux Main Street program is dedicated to making Thibodaux a vibrant and inviting place to work, shop or visit. Benoit said the committee is interested in adding more vendors to give customers an assortment to choose from.

Booth rental is $20 for a yearly membership or $10 weekly.
