Thibodaux residents can expect to pay slightly more for garbage pickup, effective this month.

Solid Waste Disposal Inc. (SWDI) announced last week rates are increasing 67 cents starting with the February billing cycle. Customers will now pay $16.96 monthly for garbage service – up from $16.29.

“This is nothing that we haven’t done in the past,” said Debbie Daigle, the city’s finance director. “Every year, as per the contract with SWDI, we raise the rates depending on the customer price index.”

The 2008 rate, she said, is 4.1 percent.

Discounted rates are provided to qualifying customers. Depending on their hardship status, low-income households can pay either $13.96 or $15.46 monthly. A city ordinance allowing the discounted rate requires household incomes to fall within state and federal poverty guidelines.

To receive the lower garbage rates, customers must provide a copy of federal and state income tax returns from the last three years and must complete an application form. The form is available at City Hall in the Utility Collection Office.
