A 17-year-old Thibodaux High School student is undergoing psychiatric evaluation in connection with alleged threats to harm students and teachers, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

The student, who has not yet been publicly identified, may face criminal charges of terrorizing and simple assault.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre and Superintendent of Schools JoAnn Matthews said that a school administrator spoke to a school resource officer that the teen had a list of students he planned to kill. Direct threats, the officer was told, were made to the lives of students at the school.

Questioned by detectives, the teen described a plan to bring a shotgun to school to kill specific students. Whether he had access to a shotgun or other weapons was not disclosed by law enforcement officials.

“We take reports of these types seriously and move swiftly to investigate any allegations of this nature,” Matthews said. “We ask parents and students to please continue to report any suspicious information you may have to school personnel.”

Sheriff Webre said he is thankful to those who made report, and urged vigilance by staff, parents and students at all schools.

“Whether you see a threat yourself, or hear about it through a third party, remember that by reporting such suspicious behavior, you may not only be saving your own life, but the lives of so many others,” Webre said.

Lt. Brennan Matherne, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman, said he did not know whether the teen had access to weapons. Detectives are in the process of executing search warrants in connection with the investigation.

During questioning, the teen admitted to creating a list some time during the previous school year, which he said he destroyed. He admitted, authorities said, to “keeping the list in his mind.”
