Matthew Zugsberger, of 2316 St. Bernard Rd. Apt. E in Thibodaux, was arrested Thursday for possession with the intent to distribute a Schedule I CDS (marijuana), possession of a Schedule I CDS (hashish) and possession of drug paraphernalia, Louisiana State Police Troop C reported.

Troopers received a call Wednesday from the Mendocino Major Task Force in Ukiah, Calif., about a large amount of marijuana that was discovered at a private delivery service destined for Zugsberger’s residence. The package contained three large bags of marijuana. Troopers agreed to take delivery of the marijuana in an attempt to further the investigation, authorities said.

On Thursday, with the help of Thibodaux Police, the troopers received the shipment of marijuana and conducted an undercover operation against Zugsberger. Authorities said a search warrant was conducted on Zugsberger’s residence, where troopers discovered approximately 2.12 pounds of marijuana – including 934 grams of marijuana initially discovered in California.

Zugsberger admitted he paid $6000 per pound for the marijuana, which appeared to have a much higher THC content, state police said. Troopers also discovered 11 grams of hashish oil and $4640 in Zugsberger’s possession.

Michael Mahoney was at the residence at the time of the search warrant. He had approximately one gram of marijuana in his possession, state police said.

Zugsberger claimed to have a medical marijuana license from California. However, authorities said the state’s Medical Marijuana License is only valid in California and only allows patients to possess small amounts of the substance. Louisiana does not have a medical marijuana law and the possession of any amount of marijuana is punishable by at least six months in jail and a fine up to $500 for the first misdemeanor offense, authorities said.

Mahoney was arrested and released on a summons for possession of marijuana, state police said.
