The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that a Saturday morning hunting accident has taken the life of a 37-year-old Thibodaux man.

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Sgt. Lesley Hill said Jason Labat, 37, of 2382 La. Highway 308 in Thibodaux, was hunting squirrels with his 13-year-old son early Saturday morning in a wooded area off La. Highway 309 near the Silverado Bar.

Hill said deputies were called to that location around 7:45 a.m., after the boy called 911 and said he accidentally had shot his father.

The sheriff’s office said the younger Labat told deputies that his gun accidentally discharged while in the woods, which sent a single bullet wound into the back of Jason Labat.

The man was pronounced dead by investigators on the scene.

Hill said police social services immediately responded to the scene to provide assistance to the family.

Hill added that initial reports from the sheriff’s office say they believe the shooting was the result of an accident.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is also assisting in investigating the incident.

It is not known whether the Labats were frequent hunters or how long they had been in the woods before the incident occurred.
