A Thibodaux teen drowned Sunday afternoon in Bayou Lafourche, according to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Ivan Gaines, 16, of 115 Thoroughbred Drive, dove in the bayou to retrieve a stick while playing in a paddle boat and never resurfaced, the sheriff’s office reported. Deputies arrived at the scene at 4:55 p.m.


Water Patrol deputies searched the water at 1269 Hwy. 1 near the Crossing Bar on Hwy. 1 in Thibodaux.

When deputies first arrived, four officer took off their gear and jumped into the water in an attempt to find the teen. However, they were unsuccessful.

Gaines’ body was found at 10:10 p.m., just south of the Corssing Bar below Thibodaux, the sheriff’s office reported.
