Nine months of construction ended last Tuesday with a ribbon cutting for the new Good Earth Transit maintenance shop and office facility off South Van Ave. in Houma.

The 8,000-square-foot building includes 2,800 square feet of administrative office space and a 5,200-square-foot, full service maintenance garage.

One hundred percent of the funding for this nearly $1.6 million facility came from a federal urbanized formula grant. Such funding normally involves an 80/20 split, but Terrebonne Parish officials were able to get the 20 percent that would have fallen on the backs of local taxpayers waived.

“This is a really important new facility,” said Public Transit Administrator Wendell Voisin.

Good Earth Transit currently operates 10 buses full time in Terrebonne Parish and are expanding routes to Thibodaux. The transportation agency also has five service vehicles.

“That number will be expanding at the end of the year,” Voisin said. “We expect to have 17 buses in our fleet.”

Voisin said there are no plans to expand routes initially, but added that increased coverage could be considered, as funding is made available.
