The fourth named storm of the 2015 hurricane season, named Danny, has formed in the Atlantic Ocean and moving west-northwest, with no indication yet if it poses a threat to Louisiana or the Bayou Region.

The storm’s location is well out to sea for now.

The National Weather Service announced formation of the storm shortly before 4 p.m., upgrading what had earlier been categorized as a tropical depression.

Microwave images, the NWS said, showed well developed low and mid-level storm structure. Danny is forecast to reach hurricane strength some time Thursday.

The storm’s intensity was estimated at about 35 knots, or about 40 mph, moving at a forward speed of about 11 knots, or 12 mph.

Danny should stay on its current path for the next 72 hours, forecasters said.

“Atmospheric and oceanic conditions surrounding Danny are expected to be favorable for slow but steady strengthening,” a forecast said.

The models forecasters use for determining where a storm is going are in disagreement for Danny at this point.

Danny’s 4 p.m. (CDT) position was given as 10.9N 37.5W, or about 1595 miles east of the windward islands.
