Vandebilt Catholic High School is looking for its new athletic director after its previous one resigned amidst a Thursday night arrest for DWI.

Thibodaux Police confirmed to the Tri-Parish Times this week that it arrested longtime football coach and Vandebilt AD Charles “Laury” Dupont, 62, of 1202 Park Drive, Thibodaux, and charged him with driving while intoxicated.

Authorities said the arrest occurred at approximately 11 p.m. Thursday night after Dupont was pulled over for a vehicle infraction.

During the stop, TPD said officers suspected Dupont was under the influence of alcohol, which prompted a field sobriety test that authorities said the former coach failed.

Police said Dupont was then given a breathalyzer test and blew a .194 – which is close to 2.5 times above the legal limit of .08.

Dupont was then taken into custody and booked into the Lafourche Parish jail on the DWI charge.

Authorities said he was later released after posting bond.

A source close to Vandebilt said the school’s faculty was called in by administration Friday, during which they were informed of Dupont’s arrest and told that he had resigned from his position at the school.

The long-time coach had been with Vandebilt since 2009. He was initially hired to be the team’s head football coach and athletic director.

Dupont resigned from his football coaching post after the 2011 season because of on-going neck and back issues.

Dupont, who owns three state titles as a coach while at West St. John, coached some of his final games from the press-box after undergoing surgery on his neck.

After stepping down as football coach, Dupont served exclusively as the Terriers’ top athletic official for the past two-plus years.

Under his watch, Vandebilt hired and fired a slew of coaches from the program.

In the past two years, the Terriers have replaced its boys basketball, girls basketball, tennis, baseball and volleyball coaches.

The school also replaced former assistant athletic director Doug Hamilton in the past year, replacing him with football coach Brad Villavaso.

Vandebilt principal James Reiss will be the team’s AD until a new hire is named.

Calls to reach Dupont were not returned at press-time.

Calls to reach Vandebilt were unsuccessful because of the Labor Day school holiday.
