Several schools and organizations will hold Veterans Day programs this week to show their appreciation to veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. These events are open to the public.

Vandebilt Catholic High School’s Gary Phillips, an American history teacher, sent letters to many of the veterans in the Terrebonne area inviting them to the school’s Veterans Day program, which will be held on Friday at 9:15 a.m. at Vandebilt.

Assistant Principal Quinn Moreaux said C.J. Crist, a retired Air Force veteran, will be the featured speaker at the event. “Crist’s platform will explain the role that the Houma Airbase played in World War II,” he said. “A lot of the students don’t realize the base in Houma was once an active base. This will give the students a little history to carry with them.”

Vandebilt held a Veterans Day essay contest and the winning essays are going to be read during the program, Moreaux said. Some of the students will be dressed in vintage Army fatigues and will reenact the raising of the flag scene from the new movie release “Flags of Our Fathers.”

And at 10 a.m. on Friday, Mulberry Middle School will hold its annual Veterans Day program at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center. According to Principal Mary Aucion, the Veterans Day program is being moved to the civic center because the event has outgrown the school.

Upon recognition, veterans in attendance will be given an opportunity to express words of thanks or share a memory from their war days, said Mulberry’s principal.

Aucion said the students have worked hard on the program preparing songs and dances with patriotic themes.
