Site captains and volunteers are needed to clean 106 miles of bayou from Donaldsonville to Leeville for the 3rd annual Bayou Lafourche Clean Up on March 15.

Organized by the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program, Bayou Lafourche Freshwater District and Keep Louisiana Beautiful, the event is held from 8 a.m. until noon.

Last year the event collected almost 17 tons of garbage with 830 volunteers, said Alma Robichaux, education coordinator for BTNEP.

Event organizers are expecting the same turnout for this year’s event, but are still searching for more site captains to organize cleanup efforts near the Donaldsonville and Madewood areas of the bayou.

Site captains are responsible for soliciting volunteers, establishing an area for the distribution of supplies, finding boat access to Bayou Lafourche, selecting sites for land cleanup, selecting a site for dumpster placement, and contacting businesses and residences in the site area for their cooperation with bayou access, use of restrooms and yard sign placements.

Community and school groups, as well as the general public are encouraged to volunteer.

The public is invited to attend the next planning meeting scheduled for Feb. 26 at the Bayou Lafourche Freshwater District, 1016 St. Mary St. in Thibodaux.
