Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre is asking residents to report anyone burning or dumping illegally.

In each of the Tri-parishes, a burn ban remains in affect following hurricanes Gustav and Ike. Violators can be fined as much as $500, authorities said.

“I know everyone wants to get rid of the trash and debris collected around their house after Hurricane Gustav visited our area,” the sheriff said. “But the parish government has contracted to have this picked up and there is a ban in effect in Lafourche until further notice.”

Webre said anyone caught burning trash will receive a citation and may be arrested.

It is illegal to dump trash and yard debris anywhere in Lafourche Parish, he said.

Citizens who witness someone illegally dumping material in Lafourche are asked to call the sheriff’s office immediately. Webre said callers should try to get a license plate number or a description of the vehicle.
