West Nile Virus and St. Louis Encephalitis have been found in Terrebonne Parish’s mosquito samples.

Terrebonne Mosquito Control LLC sent a memo to Terrebonne Parish Government on July 13, confirming the discovery, while detailing a plan to combat the issue.

West Nile Virus was found by the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory near Little Caillou. St. Louis Encephalitis was also found in Terrebonne in a sample collected near Presquile Isle.

The mosquito company said in the memo that they propose an inspection of both areas, while spraying areas that are positively identified for the diseases.

Residents in the area are also being made aware to protect themselves when outdoors.

Trucks will spray the areas during evening hours in an effort to reduce the population and traps will be placed strategically in both spots, as well.

There is no known human cases of either disease locally yet this summer, though medical experts say that 8 out of 10 people who contract the disease never show symptoms.

The disease is passed from mosquito to humans through a bite.

Symptoms for West Nile Virus for those who do get sick include high fever, headache, stiff neck. Severe cases (1 in 150) can cause tremors, coma, vision loss or even paralysis.
