The state police’s “Zero for December” campaign did not achieve its goal of zero fatalities in the Troop C area in December, but authorities still call the campaign effective. “The Zero for December campaign brings awareness to the dangers of drinking and driving,” said Capt. Val Penouilh, “which can carry through to the rest of the months.”

During December, state police investigated three fatal crashes believed to be non-alcohol related. The Houma Police Dept. investigated one fatal crash in which impairment may have been a factor.

In the previous December, four people lost their lives in three fatal crashes in the Troop C area, with alcohol playing a role one of them.

With Mardi Gras approaching, authorities are hoping alcohol awareness continues. “We want people to have a good time,” said Penouilh. “We just want them to do it in a safe manner, so that they do not endanger their life or someone else’s.”

They suggest designating a driver, staying at one place or calling someone to for a ride.
