Carolyn Jean Everage Powell, 79, a native of Andalusia, Al., and a resident of Houma, La., died Sunday, January 20, 2008.


She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Ray Powell; son, David Ray Powell; daughter, Lillie Anne Salsberry and husband, Scott; grandchildren, Christopher William Authement, Abigail Ruth Salsberry and John Andrew Salsberry; sister, Myrtle Welch; sisters-in-law, Selma Everage, Ruby Southwell, Cora Lee Oswald and Louise Bowman; brother-in-law, Jack M. Powell; numerous nieces and nephews; and a very dear friend in Houma, Betty D. Lockwood.


She was preceded in death by her parents, John William “Buck” and Lillie Devada Everage; five brothers, Judge, Dimp, Sonny Boy, Pete and Sparky Everage; and three sisters, Elizabeth, Helen and Doris.

She lived in several places with her husband until settling in Houma in the 1950s. She was a devoted wife, the dearest and most loving mother and a caring friend. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and worked as a laboratory technician for more than 15 years. She found beauty and comfort in gardening, creating a splendid garden at her home in Louisiana. She was a member of the American Hemerocallis Society and Christ Baptist Church of Houma for many years.

Memorial donations can be made to Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home or a charity of your choice.

She was buried in Andalusia Memorial Cemetery.
