Della Rhodes Matherne

Della Rhodes Matherne, 98, a native of Houma, La., and resident of Bourg, La., died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013.

Mrs. Matherne was a retired Terrebonne Parish teacher. She was instrumental in furthering the cause of adult education in Terrebonne Parish and received both parish and state honors for her efforts during the 1950’s and 1960’s. She presented Christmas Nativity plays for many years at the Bourg school where she taught, St. Ann Catholic Church and Bayou United Methodist Church. She was a museum docent for 14 years, giving tours in both English and French at Southdown Plantation Home Museum in Houma.

She is survived by her sons, Kenneth Sr. (Anita Aguillard) and Don (Consuelo) Matherne; daughter, Sue Ellen (Loyd Jr.) Olin; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous step-great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Matherne; parents, Luke and Corinne Rhodes; brothers, Druby, David, Lawrence, Milton, William and Harold Rhodes; sisters, Iola Duplantis and Ruby Boudreaux; and one step-grandchild.

Visitation will be 8 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, at St. Ann Catholic Church in Bourg with services to follow. Burial will be at Matherne-Rogers Cemetery. (Samart)
