Dr. Philip Davis Uzee, 95, retired Nicholls State University historian, dean and archivist, died in Dallas, Texas, on Thursday, April 1, 2010.


A 1931 graduate of Raceland High School and U.S. Army veteran, Dr. Uzee earned history degrees from LSU in 1935, 1938 and 1950. He went on to teach at Valere-Guidry Elementary School in Cut Off, at LSU and McNeese Junior College before joining Nicholls’ staff in 1953.

In 1963, he became dean of the Nicholls College of Liberal Arts and a professor of history 10 years later. The following year, in 1974, he relinquished his dean title, serving as the university archivist through 1984, when he retired.


Dr. Uzee was inducted into the Tri-Parish Hall of Fame in 2006.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. today, April 7, at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral in Thibodaux. Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at the church.

He will be buried at St. Joseph Co-Cathedral Cemetery.
