Thibodaux church finds its place after 10-year expansion

Ellen Cancienne, a native of Thibodaux, La., and resident of New Orleans, La., died on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, following a 17-month battle with brain cancer.

Mrs. Cancienne was a pharmacist, having worked in Opelousas, Lafayette, New Orleans and Orlando, Fla. She graduated from Thibodaux High School, Nicholls State and Northeast Louisiana universities. She earned a pharmacy degree at NLU in 1979. She enjoyed traveling and visiting the beach.


She is survived by her partner, Cathy Rose; parents, Philip and Vivian Pontif Cancienne; sisters, Elizabeth (Alfred) Webre and Carol (Irene Bruce) Cancienne; brother, Philip (Gloria) Cancienne III; nephew, Nicholas Webre; aunts, Elsie Behrhorst, Alice Guidry and Angelle Pontif; uncles, George (Hilda) and John (Faye) Pontif, Clyde Naquin and Earl Vice.

Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Broussard, followed by a funeral mass at noon. Internment will be at 3:30 p.m. in St. Joseph cemetery in Thibodaux.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests masses or donations to American Cancer Society, Hospice of Acadiana, or a charity of your choice.
