Superintendents name challenges for new school year

Elliott Spencer Smith Sr., 86, a native of Lafayette, La., and resident of Houma, La., died at 2:55 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2011.

Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a retired Production Operator for Texaco Oil, Inc. He was an outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, and playing the harmonica and Scrabble. He was a renowned champion checker player and was Baptist.


He is survived by his children, Elliott Jr. (Sandy), Wayne (Shela), Keith, and Gary (Debora) Smith, Linda (Leighton) Smith, Arlene (Vories) Kelley and Leah (Richard) Owen; 14 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Crochet; parents, Nathaniel and Leah Smith; brothers, Archie, Nathaniel, Evres, Adonis, Joe and Lineas Smith; sisters, Frances and Addie Diamond; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, and 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3 at Chauvin Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow. Burial will be at Terrebonne Memorial Park. (Chauvin)
