Gertie Mae Rhodes Johnson, 85, a native and resident of Thibodaux, La. died Sunday, November 11, 2007.


She is survived by three daughters, Gloria J. Butler and her husband Roy, Kathleen J. Simon and her husband LeEdward, and Beryl J. Bailey and her husband Horace; two sons, Warren J. Johnson and Samuel J. Johnson III; one stepson, Glenn Flakes and his wife Mary; three brothers, Earl “E.J.” Rhodes and his wife Theresa, Thomas J. Rhodes, and Lloyd Bernard Rhodes; four sisters, Lisker R. Wagner, Lillian R. Johnson and her husband Earl, Thelma Rhodes, and Eula Pearl Emanuel; 18 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel J. Johnson, Jr.; her parents, Madison and Maggie Williams Rhodes; one son, Reginald L. Braud; two daughters, Barbara J. Johnson and Carol J. Winston; three brothers, James, Edward, and Aaron Rhodes; four sisters, Erma R. Young, Fabiola Rhodes, Victoria R. Jones, and Elouise R. Peltier; and her grandparents, Aaron and Irene Fletcher Rhodes and Hudson and Mariah Johnson Williams.

Gertie was a devout Baptist and a member of Moses Baptist Church. She was a member of the Choir, Home Mission, served on the Deaconess Board, and was a member of the 5th District Southern Association. She was also a member of Rebecca Chapter 23, Order of Eastern Star, American Legion Raymond Stafford Post 513 Auxiliary and VFW Post 5097 Auxiliary.

The Funeral is scheduled for Saturday, November 17, 2007, at 11:00 a.m., at Moses Baptist Church in Thibodaux. She will be buried in Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery in Thibodaux.

Kennedy Funeral Home of Raceland is in charge of arrangements.
