Corps of Engineers wins flood fight during Gustav

Herbert “Pete” Paul Pitre, 80, a native and resident of Houma, La., died at 11:48 a.m. Tuesday, September 9.
He is survived by two sons, Herbert Paul Pitre and wife Laura of Houma, and David John Pitre and wife Penny of Houma; one daughter, Laura Pitre Crossland and husband Ken of Houma; one sister, Dolive Bergeron of Houma; seven grandchildren, Jason Paul Pitre, Samantha Pitre, Jason Champagne, Katie Champagne, Mathew Champagne, Whitney Crossland and Amy Brown; and three great-grandchildren, Ariel, L.J. and Rylee Ann Pitre.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virgie Lee Fournier Pitre; his parents, Ashful Pitre and Inez Thibodeaux Pitre; and one sister, Barbara Bonvillain.
He was a retired rig supervisor with Houtech and a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Marine Corps League and Woodmen of the World. He was a parishioner of St. Bernadette Catholic Church.
He was buried at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2.
