Irene Crochet Michel, 86, a native of Terrebonne Parish, La., and resident of Houma, La., died Tuesday, March 18, 2014.


Mrs. Michel was an active parishioner of St. Bernadette Soubirous Catholic Church and a member of Catholic Daughters. Religion was at the forefront of her life and she received Holy Communion from Pope John Paul II during his visit to New Orleans, La., She also served as associate editor of Bishop Warren Boudreaux’s book “Memoirs of a Cajun Bishop”. She worked for the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux as a writer and photographer and was a member of the Terrebonne Historical and Cultural Society, Friends of the Library and Terrebonne Writers Guild. She was a devoted homemaker and was awarded “Mother of the Year” in 1966 as a tribute to her dedication to family life and child upbringing.

She is survived by nine children, Carole (Robert) Prevost and Michael (Ann), Victor (Sheila), Charles (Paula), Chris (Jacqueline), Steve (Julie), Angelo (Denise), Gerald (Himaya) and Martin (Allison); sisters, Annie Crochet, Cecelia Chatagnier, Agnes Babin, Dorothy Didier and Frances Sellars; 29 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Michel; parents Clovis and Isabella Crochet; sisters, Bernice Curole and Velma and Isabella Crochet; brothers, Clovis Jr., Paul and Peter Crochet; son, Paul Jr. Crochet; and three grandchildren.


Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at Chauvin Funeral Home and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, March 21, at St. Bernadette Soubirous Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial to follow. Burial will be at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2. (Chauvin)
