Joseph “Joe” Henry Smith, 76, a native of Houston, Tx., and a resident of Houma, La., died at 4:27 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, in Denham Springs, La.


He is survived by two sons, Stephen J. Smith and wife Maria, Gregg A. Smith and wife Donna Lynn “Rocky,” of Houma; one daughter, Holly Smith Galjour and husband Thomas of Houma; one sister Maryann Smith Pearce and husband Tom of Bellevue, Tx.; one sister-in-law, Janet Smith of Houma; two granddaughters, Heather Ann Martin and Hannah Ann Martin; and one great-granddaughter, Piper Ann Martin.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Chauvin Smith; his parents, Henry Gratton Smith and Anna Katherine Bato Smith; and one brother, Stephen J. Smith.

He was a retired businessman and banker. He was a founder of the board of South Louisiana Bank and served as chairman for 21 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of the VFW and a third-degree knight with the St. Francis Knights of Columbus. He was a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Co-cathedral.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, September 26, at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery No. 2.

Chauvin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
