Joseph “Pharaoh” “Big Joe” Charles, Sr., 79, a native and resident of Raceland, LA., died Friday, December 29, 2006.


Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to funeral time Saturday, January 06, 2007 at Morning Star Baptist Church in Raceland. Religious Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Church with burial in the Church Cemetery.

He is survived by his devoted companion, Naoma Crandle of Raceland; five sons, Joseph Charles, Jr., and wife, Imogene, Leroy Charles of Thibodaux, LA., Samuel Charles of Hattisburg, Mississippi, Justin Charles of Gonzales, LA., and Javor Charles and wife, Vallery of Raceland; three daughters, Elnora Sims and husband, Nathan, Rosalie Sims and husband, Bryan of Raceland, and Cassandra Williams and husband, Rasheen of Houma; one brother, LeRoyal Charles and wife, Josie Mae of Raceland; two sisters, Elouise C. Meade of Raceland and Mabel C. Johnson of Dallas, Texas; twenty-eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Lizzie Jackson Charles; grandparents, Willie, Sr., and Susan Langman Jackson and Alphonse and Ada Lane Charles; one grandson, and one granddaughter.

He was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church and served on the Usher Board for over forty years.

He was a member of Raceland Male Chorus for over thirty years and a member of Labor National Local Union # 689. His hobbies included gardening.

Kennedy Funeral Home of Raceland is in charge of the arrangements.
