Laura Jones, 81, a native of Lexington, Tenn., and resident of Thibodaux, La., died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014.

Ms. Jones was a compassionate teacher who served for 25 years. She began her career as a first grade teacher at Schriever Elementary and later became a professor and counselor at Nicholls State University.


She enjoyed gardening, traveling, camping, remodeling her home and spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her sons, Buck (Jane Ellen) and Clint Jones; daughters, Elise (Ray) Poplus and Gianna (William) Cothren; brothers, Olen, Nolen, Fred, Jerry and Terry Powers; sisters, Jean Jones and Ara Kopocs; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Osdell and Minor Powers; and sisters, Scarlette Wood and Diana Waldon.


Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at Landry’s Funeral Home and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at First United Methodist Church in Thibodaux with services to follow. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. (Landry’s)
