Laurance Burkley Schauf, 67, a resident of Independence, La. and former resident of Terrebonne Parish, died Friday, August 17, 2007, in Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center.


He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Sinagra Schauf; two sisters, Constance Malmstrom and husband, Richard, and Gretchen Weidman and husband, Al; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Laura Baragona Schauf.

Laurance was a retired teacher and librarian from the Terrebonne Parish School System, a member of the Terrebonne Retired Teachers Association and Louisiana Retired Teachers Association.


He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hammond, president of the Independence Lions Club; founder and past president of the Independence Chamber of Commerce, board member and past chairman of the Independence Italian Festival, charter member of Terrebonne Fellowship Lodge in Houma, past Master of Independence Masonic Lodge; 32nd degree member of Scottish Rite Knights Templar of the York Rite, member of Order of Eastern Star, and past president and secretary/treasurer of the Tangipahoa Shrine Club, Jerusalem Temple.

For his community service, he received the Louisiana Governor’s Award.

He is buried in Newellton Legion Memorial Cemetery in Newellton, La.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donation can be made to local libraries or your favorite charities.
